Foreign ownership of American farmland is quietly expanding, with China among
the top buyers. This alarming trend poses serious threats to our national
security, food supply, and the sovereignty of U.S. agriculture.

X>(1a): A Growing National Security Concern

Over the past decade, a huge amount of American farmland has quietly been sold to foreign entities, with China emerging as one of the top buyers. What once seemed like distant transactions buried in real estate records has now become a matter of national security. According to recent reports, China owns more than 50,000 acres of farmland in North Carolina alone, with some of that land uncomfortably close to U.S. military installations. The growing presence of foreign-controlled agricultural land raises urgent questions about food security, surveillance risks, and the overall sovereignty of America’s agricultural backbone.

This trend didn’t appear overnight. Since the early 2010s, foreign investors—corporate and state-affiliated—have been purchasing land across the U.S. at an accelerating pace. While Canada and European nations account for a large portion of foreign ownership, China’s interest has sparked the most concern due to its adversarial stance on global issues and its record of economic and cyber espionage. Critics point out that while the U.S. has tight restrictions on American companies buying land in China, the same level of scrutiny is not applied in reverse, leaving a gaping loophole in our policy.

What alarms many Americans is not just the quantity of land owned, but the strategic placement. In North Carolina and other states, Chinese-owned properties have been reported within proximity to military bases and sensitive infrastructure. This raises the specter of intelligence gathering under the guise of agriculture. Lawmakers have begun sounding the alarm, calling for stricter regulations, disclosure requirements, and even outright bans on foreign ownership of land near national defense assets.

Beyond security, the issue also threatens the U.S. food supply chain. As control over agricultural production consolidates into fewer and increasingly foreign hands, the potential for economic manipulation grows. American farmers, already under financial pressure, find themselves competing with foreign-backed investors whose long-term intentions may not align with the country’s food independence. Selling off the soil that feeds us to foreign powers is not just an economic gamble—it’s a matter of national interest.

This has to stop now. It’s time for federal and state governments to step up. Measures are finally being taken to to monitor, regulate, and, where necessary, reverse foreign acquisitions of U.S. farmland. America’s heartland should never become a bargaining chip on the geopolitical chessboard. If this trend continues unchecked, we risk not only losing control over our land, but also over the future security, prosperity, and sovereignty of our nation.
